Electric Bicycle Law in Israel

The Israel authorities has passed legislation, as of December 2009, that allows electric bicycles to be legal for street use in the country and therefore subject to the same law as regular bicycles, under the following criteria:

  • Pedelec Drive - the motor is activated by the rider's pedaling effort and it has to cut out completely when the rider stops pedaling
  • Electric motor power - less then 250W
  • Maximum speed - 25 kilometers per hour. Also, the electric motor power decreses with the advance of the bicycle speed until it completely stops when the bicycles reaches the maximum speed
  • Riders must be at least 14 years of age
  • Riders must wear an helmet
  • Has to fully comply with the European standard - BSEN 15194
