Self stabilizing e-bike

Do you want to ride a bike without having to learn to balance?

Engineers from Japan are developing a self-stabilizing electric bicycle, one that can stay upright by itself while being propelled and steered by electric motors. This bike can literally stands up by itself.

Of course that the stability of a bike can be achieved simply by some support wheels, but maybe this kind of invention does offer some new possibilities and usable applications...

Possible market for this invention is elderly people, avoiding accidents for people with disabilities or maybe even can help teaching people who don't know how to balance a bike. It can also open a gate to new development in the area of self stabilizing machines.

Two motors controls the motion of the bicycle – the motor on the handlebars controls steering, and the motor in the back drive the rear wheel.

A LED is connected to the back side of the bicycle, and a camera mounted behind the bike monitor the LED’s movement.

A gyro-sensor attached to the bicycle detect changes in the bicycle’s direction angle.

A computer seated on the bike get a feedback from the sensors and controls the motors based on this feedback.

The system job is to maintain the bike balance and follow a straight path.

Future development may include stabilization of the bike at zero speed, downsizing of the added components, improved algorithms to account for potholes, different road terrain and more.
